The highest levels of IGF-II gene expression are in brain, spinal cord, and nerves, and its expression in perinatal muscle correlates closely with synaptogenesis in rats. Neurite (axon or dendrite) outgrowth and the survival of neurons in culture are supported by IGFs. Following nerve crush, infusion of IGFs increase, whereas anti-IGF antibodies decrease the rate of sciatic nerve regeneration in rats. IGF-I mRNAs are increased all along the nerve distal to crush, whereas IGF-II mRNAs are increased mostly at the end of nerves and in denervated muscle. Disconnection of nerves from muscle results in motoneuron death in neonatal rats. Such motoneuron death is prevented by IGF-II, whereas exacerbated by anti-IGF antibodies. Others have shown that transgenic mice over-expressing IGF-I have brains 55% larger than normal.

He has presented several abstracts and Faculty orations in many International conferences on Diabetes and Podiatry, besides chairing some International conferences. Currently he is also reviewer of the journals of American Diabetes Association, namely Diabetes care and Diabetes.

Eustache completed a PhD in immunology from McGill University and did post-doctoral research at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Alabama at Birmingham with an award from the Irvington Institute for Immunological Research. Farhad Rezaee is a senior scientist at Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam/University Medical Center Groningen. He received his Ph.D. at Medical University of Leiden in the Netherlands. Dr. Rezaee is a Systems Biologist (clinical genomics and proteomics) with focus on the discovery of defined and convinced clinical Biomarkers for every disease in human blood. His major research focuses are: 1- Obesity, diabetes, CVDs and rare diseases, 2- Biomarkers, 3- link between adipocytes, plasma lipoproteins, pancreas, and liver with respect to energy metabolic disorders, and 4- Systems Biology and age-related diseases, prevention of diseases and/or extend healthy aging. Dr. Rezaee is convinced that Systems Biology is the key to all medical and biological questions as well as all diseases. Last but not least, the 20 years’ experience and excellent Systems Biology expertise of Dr. Rezaee is lead to the development of a novel methodology, which is guarantee for the discovery of defined clinical Biomarkers for every disease in human blood by BCB.

Dr Sebastian Oltean studied clinical medicine at “Iuliu Hatieganu” Medical School in Cluj- Napoca, Romania followed by training in Nephrology and Dialysis. He then moved to USA where in 2004 obtained a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, followed by postdoctoral training at Duke University Medical Center, where he studied connections between alternative splicing regulation and disease. In 2008 he moved to University of Bristol (UK) where he is now a University research fellow and principal investigator. One of his main research themes is the understanding of therapeutic potential of targeting alternative splicing in diabetic nephropathy.

My main research interests include the study of alternative splicing in vivo, coordinated regulation of alternative splicing in physiology and disease as well as manipulation of splice isoforms choice for therapeutic goals. Alternative splicing is the main process that decides the diversity of proteins in our bodies. It is estimated that more than 90% of genes are alternatively spliced in humans and therefore this process affects all cellular properties. The function of the majority of splicing isoforms is not characterized yet. Numerous splicing isoforms have been associated with disease progression in recent years and there is much interest in understanding their contribution to pathogenesis and how this can be reversed.

Emilio Herrera is PhD from Complutense University (Madrid), Emeritus professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Faculties of Pharmacy and Medicine, University San Pablo-CEU in Madrid, Spain and Doctor Honoris causa in Medicine by Lund University (Sweden). He carried out his postdoctoral studies in Harvard University and Northwestern University Medical Schools. He has 282 peer-reviewed papers with IF (total IF by JCR-2009, 755.20) and 77 book chapters, having a h-index of 37 and has directed 49 PhD thesis.

Sebastian studied clinical medicine at “Iuliu Hatieganu” Medical School, Cluj-Napoca, Romania and trained as a junior doctor in Nephrology and Dialysis before moving to USA where he obtained a PhD from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2004.This was followed by postdoctoral training at Duke University Medical Center (North Carolina, USA) where he became interested in studying the connections between alternative splicing and cancer. Using fluorescent splicing reporters that recapitulate in vivo the alternative splicing of fibroblast growth factor 2 and are able to follow epithelial-mesenchymal transitions he discovered unusual plasticity in prostate cancer cells in animal models. This was further followed by studies of circulating tumour cells from patients showing that the same plasticity is associated with aggressive prostate and breast cancer behavior.Since moving to the University of Bristol in 2008 he continued to study alternative splicing in vivo, switching the focus towards the importance of VEGF splice isoforms in cancer as well as kidney diseases.

Dr. Zhengyuan Xia had served as a cardiovascular anesthetist for more than 10 years in China before he completed his Ph.D study at the University of British Columbia (UBC), in Canada in 2004 and postdoctoral studies at UBC and University of Calgary in 2007. He is Assistant Professor and Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Hong Kong, and his major focus of research is cardiac protection during ischemia-reperfusion in diabetes.
